One of the most important decisions for your first trip to China is how you want to travel.
Some people prefer to arrange it all by themselves, some people prefer to leave it all to "the experts".
When I first traveled in China in 1986, options were very limited. There were few hotels and quality was hit or miss. You could not venture easily on your own since most places were still closed to foreigners. Roads and infrastructure was chaotic to say the least.
Tourism has come a long way since then. Hotels are popping up everywhere with excellent standards that rival and in many cases, surpass the West. Transportation networks are extensive and modern. Getting around China on your own has never been easier.
Here's a clear comparison of the main options including pros & cons so you can determine what is more suitable for your first trip to China.
China Travel Style Comparison
| Aspect | Independent Travel | Group Tour | Private Tour | Hybrid Approach |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flexibility | High - Set your own pace | Low - fixed schedule | High - Set your own pace | High - Set your own pace |
| Cost | Cheapest | Moderate | Higher | Moderate |
| Personalization | Complete | Low | Very High | Very High |
| Ease for First-Timers | Medium - requires more preparation | Easiest - least stress | Easy - you add the final touches | Medium - requires some preparation |
| Language Barrier | You handle it - Translation Apps | Guide handles everything | Dedicated Guide handles everything | Mix |
| Best For | Adventurous/Flexible Travelers, have time to plan | Budget Concious Groups, Seniors, Non-adventurous | Families, Comfort Seekers | Independent but want some support |
Choose what's best for your own travel style, budget and personal circumstances. In the end, there is no "better way" other than what you will be comfortable with.
Independent Travel in China
Pros:
- Much more freedom and flexibility
- Usually cheaper
- Deeper, more authentic experiences
- Easier than ever thanks to apps (Trip.com, Didi, Alipay, WeChat, etc.)
Cons:
- More planning required
- Language barrier can be frustrating at times
- You handle all logistics (trains, tickets, etc.)
Best for: Solo travelers, couples, and adventurous families who enjoy freedom and figuring things out. You have to be comfortable with managing SIMs, VPN, apps and digital ecosystem for payments, ticket purchases, etc.
Traveling on your own in China is great for those who like exploring and planning and organizing all the details (and have the time to do so). If you don't want to have a set plan and want a flexible schedule, this is definitely the way to go.
It can be a very rewarding experience and for some, the only way to experience what the real China is all about.
Do-it-yourself China travel is for you and your family if:
- You prefer to explore on your own rather than with a group
- You don't feel intimidated about not knowing the language - you know there's always some one out there to lend you a hand
- Your kids are "good little travelers" and can take things as they come...
- You have the time to plan your itinerary, book hotels, trains, flights, attraction tickets, etc. and also realize that things might not work exactly as expected, but that's all right, it's all part of the adventure!
- You have realistic expectations. Planning your own excursions takes time. So does waiting for buses, taxis, trains, etc.
- Although this can offer the least expensive way to travel, you can also go as luxurious as you wish. You choose whether you stay in a 5 star hotel or in a hostel, whether you ride the metro or hire a private car.
- This option also gives you the most flexibility. You can choose to prepare as much as possible ahead of time or just plan as you go along.
Traveling on your own in the bigger cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xian is relatively easy as the infrastructure is there to cater to visitors. Once you go further away from the major centers it might be a bit more challenging and the level of English spoken there also decreases. But you also find that the people are warmer and eager to lend a hand.
Important Note for Independent Travelers
To travel independently in China with confidence, you will need to be comfortable using a few key tools: setting up WeChat Pay or Alipay (for payments), getting a local SIM card or eSIM, and installing a reliable VPN before arrival. Translation apps (with offline language packs) and the Trip.com app for booking trains will also be essential. Once these are set up, most travelers find independent travel surprisingly smooth and rewarding.
All the detailed, step-by-step guides for setting up payments, getting connected, buying train tickets, and more are available in our Resources & Apps sections.
China Organized Tours
When traveling with an organized tour, you join a group (usually 10-30 people) and an English-speaking (or your chosen language) guide on a set itinerary.
Pros:
- Everything is planned and taken care of
- Professional guides handle language and logistics
- Good for peace of mind
Cons:
- Less flexibility, no deviations from the pre-set itinerary
- Can feel rushed or touristy
- Limited opportunities for spontaneous experiences
Best for: First-timers who prefer zero stress, seniors, travelers with limited time, people who want maximum convenience at a reasonable price.
Are organized group tours suitable for families with children? The typical day in a China tour with temple visits, the imperial palace, a couple of museums and the Peking Opera to cap it all off would not be quite the hit with the kids. BUT, there are organized China tours tailored for families which are slower paced and include many kid-friendly activities.
Our Family Note: My very first trip to China (1986) was with an organized tour. Back then, there were not many other options, but it turned out to be a fantastic 3 weeks with a lovely guide "Ann", and 40 or so fun travelers that were just as excited about China as we were. We remained friends through the years, truly fond memories...
Organized China Tours for Families
There are a number of tour operators that have designed their tours with families in mind:
- China tours that are tailored for families are slower paced than the regular tours
- The itineraries include lots of kid-friendly activities to keep the children entertained like kite flying, dumpling making and bike excursions
- You join other families with kids. It is fun for the children to have pals to run around with. You don't worry if your kids are being too noisy, get cranky or start acting up. Your fellow travelers are also parents and they know...
- The groups are normally smaller than with a regular China tour, between 16-20 to a group or about 3-4 families
- Your tour operator takes care of all the details, transportation, accommodations, most meals and activities so you can have a stress-free holiday
There are many companies offering a number of Family China Tours from 10 days to 3 weeks in a wide range of prices and themes from upscale Disney Vacations to the small group close-to-the-ground vacations by Intrepid. As always, search for options and check recent reviews before booking.
China Private Tours (Highly Recommended for Families)
You have your own private guide, driver, and vehicle for all of the trip. This is becoming very popular among families, first-timers, groups of friends that want the flexibity without the hassle.
Pros:
- Completely personalized pace and interests
- Dedicated attention for children and elderly family members
- Your guide handles all logistics, ticketing, and translation
- Much more flexible than group tours
- Private transportation is safer and more comfortable with kids
Cons:
- More expensive than group tours or independent travel
Best for: Families and groups that want the flexibility without the hassle. The larger your group, the cheaper the "per person cost" so for couples and solo travelers this option could be a bit pricy.
You have full control of your day, when you start, how long you spend at each place, which activities to add or scrap.
For families with children, a private tour is often the best choice. It reduces stress significantly while giving you the freedom to adjust plans based on how the kids are feeling each day.
Our Family Note: On our first China Family Adventure trip we booked a private tour because of the size of our group and to make things easier with grandma and grandpa and the kids. This was the right option for us.
We did cover a lot of ground with the limited time we had and still felt very relaxed. It was enjoyable without the hassles of arranging transportation for our large group and losing half of it in the middle of town! It was nice having our own van with driver that would conveniently materialize at the right moment to take us where we needed to go. Grandma and grandpa appreciated not having to walk long distances or up and down the stairs to get to the metro.
Hybrid Approach
Under this approach you combine the best of both worlds. You plan and travel independently on your own schedule but join small group or private tours or hire a private driver / guide for days requiring complex logistics or tiring days.
This is currently the sweet spot for many first-time and repeat visitors.
Why Hybrid works so well:
- You get freedom + convenience
- Saves money compared to full tours
- Reduces stress at key moments
Our Family Note: We traveled independently on our last trip to Beijing, but booked a small group tour to a fantastic hike to the Great Wall starting from Jinshanling and ending at Simatai, a bit out of the way. The guide and driver handled everything, no worrying about ending in the wrong side or trying to figure out Didi or public transport for the way back. It was truly beautiful, enjoyable and hassle-free.
So, what's your best way to travel?
Consider your options and circumstances to decide:
- How large is your group? Is everybody in good health or are there members with limited mobility?
- How do you normally travel? Do you have the time (and nerves...) to plan and organize?
- Finances will also play a role in your decision. It's important to find a good balance between cost vs. time and convenience depending on your priorities.
And whichever way you choose... it will be perfect with the right attitude and an open mind!
