This section of the Wall is named after the nearby town Huanghuacheng or "Yellow Flower City" which takes its name from the explosion of wild yellow flowers that erupts every summer.

The Huanghuacheng Great Wall runs along Haoming Lake and the views are stunning with the gleaming waters, the towering mountains and the majestic Wall that snakes through it all. Some segments of the wall are even submerged in water, a unique feature to this section.

This is becoming a favorite Great Wall hiking spot and there are other activities as well for a great day trip outside of Beijing. There are boat tours on the lake and a planked boardwalk that runs alongside the water, both giving stunning views and a different perspective of the Great Wall.

The Huanhuacheng Great Wall has been restored and the climb is an easy one. You can still see a section that is the original unrestored wall and there are three submerged sections.

Manageable Crowds: It is roughly 80 kilometers from central Beijing (about a 2-hour drive) and less famous internationally than Mutianyu so while it remains a favorite for locals, it has very low tourist congestion, especially on weekdays.

The Cons: What to Keep in Mind

Lacks the Classic Crest Peak Aesthetic: If you want the dramatic image of a wall snaking over dry, jagged mountain ridges as far as the eye can see, sections like Jinshanling or Mutianyu are better fits. Huanghuacheng is a lush, lakeside landscape.
Fewer Watchtowers: The hikeable segments on the wall itself are relatively short compared to the massive contiguous paths of Badaling or Mutianyu.
Logistics: Public transit from central Beijing requires bus transfers, so it is usually best reached by booking the tourist bus or hiring a private driver
