The Jiankou Great Wall

The Wild Great Wall

The Great Wall at Jiankou

Great Wall of China Jiankou Section, the Wild Wall

The Great Wall at Jiankou is the "Wild Wall" nestled between Mutianyu Wall on the east and Huanghuacheng on the west. It offers a completely different scenery with its verdant rolling hills, steep cliffs, narrow passes, and an untouched wall... as authentic as it gets as it has not been restored.

The names of some of the most beautiful spots are an indication of what's in store: Sky Stair, Beijing Knot, Nine-Eye Tower... this is certainly one of the most magnificent segments of the Great Wall but also one of the most treacherous as some spots are tough to conquer, Sky Stair's angle of elevation is 70 to 80 degrees!

Needless to say, this is a very challenging section! Because it is built on steep ridges with sheer cliffs on both sides, it is widely considered the most perilous and challenging section of the entire wall.

Great Wall of China Jiankou Steep Section, the Wild Wall

Who it is for

  • Experienced Hikers and Mountaineers: The terrain features broken masonry, crumbling steps, overgrown bushes, and near-vertical climbs that require hand-over-hand scrambling.

  • Adventure Enthusiasts: It is perfect for those who want a raw, primitive experience far away from the commercialized, heavily crowded tourist zones.

  • Landscape Photographers: Jiankou is a renowned hotspot for photography. Its dramatic, zigzagging white dolomite ridges offer some of the most striking visual backdrops of the Great Wall.

  • Backpackers & Campers: Travelers looking for multi-day treks often hike from Jiankou through to the restored Mutianyu section, or opt for permitted camping excursions.

Who Should Avoid It

  • Casual Tourists & Beginners: It is an unmaintained section with zero safety barriers, no bathrooms, and loose rocks.

  • Children and Seniors: Due to the extreme physical demands and severe fall risks, travelers under 18 or over 60 are strongly discouraged from attempting it.

  • Anyone with Vertigo: Portions of the hike force you to walk along narrow, unguarded edges high above the ground.

Tips for visiting Jiankou Great Wall

  • There are NO facilities at all on the wall, bring plenty of water and food.
  • To hike the entire segment takes at least a couple of days. You can overnight at either Village or pitch a tent at Beijing Knot where the terrain is a bit more even

Alternative Route for Moderate Fit Levels

If you want the breathtaking panoramic views of Jiankou without taking on its most dangerous segments, you can hire a guide to take you up a forest trail from Nanjili or Xizhazi Village directly to Zhengbeilou Tower. From there, you can enjoy the view and complete a relatively safe, 5-hour eastbound hike into the fully restored Mutianyu Great Wall section.
